Ply-split braiding

Tickets: £130 Book here

Members: £104 Book here

Suitable for age 16+

Ply-split braiding is a unique textile technique with origins in the deserts of Rajasthan, where it was mainly used to make decorative camel belts. It’s a way of working whereby high-twist, four-ply cords split through the centres of each other, and a piece of work is gradually constructed.

This workshop gives you the basics of ply-split braiding, using key structures and techniques that will set you up for anything you might do with it afterwards. In the workshop you’ll use cords made from cotton, linen and wool; you’ll make three different braids; you’ll start to learn how to make your own cords, and you’ll know how to take your interest further after the workshop.

We’ll also talk about the origins of ply-split braiding and you’ll see how the pieces you’re making connect with these traditional items.

Our day will be thorough but friendly, and suitable for beginners.

Gripfids (ply-splitting tools), are provided for use during the workshop, and are available for purchase at the end of the workshop
