Enjoy the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Museum of Natural History after dark in this water-themed joint Late Night!

Follow our special water trail to find favourite water-related objects chosen by our Visitor Services team, meet artists and researchers and explore water issues in different societies with talks, craft activities and tours.

Listen to the sounds of the rain forest, including Bayakan rain-drumming, in a specially-composed sound track using material from the sound archives and handle objects related to water from the handling collections.

Then wander the galleries, enjoying a drink from our pop-up Tap Social bar!

Evenki Beadwork Activity

Diving into Evenki mythology, we will explore how a native Siberian creation story appears in Evenki beaded embroidery and costume. With some professional help and inspiration from traditional artist and culture carrier, Galina Veretnova, local artist Anya Gleizer will guide visitors to make an Evenki beadwork piece of their own, in a simplified format that is open to all regardless of age or experience (families welcome!)

Women’s Waters Activity

Looking back through time and across cultures, the woman’s body has always remained a mystery. In Women’s Waters we will explore how women’s fertility health and knowledge have been addressed cross-culturally and historically through a series of “magic” objects used to aid childbirth and conception. We will pull open hidden drawers at the Pitt Rivers and question how contemporary unknowns challenge people trying to conceive through a discussion with clinician and researcher Ashley Younger. Exploring the contradictory experiences of pregnancy ambiguity with a fertility tarot deck developed by Project (Mis)Conceptions at NHM London, this tour finishes off with an opportunity to get creative and make a tarot card of our own, or write a votive offering into a strip of copper. (This is an 18+ activity. Minors can be accompanied by a consenting parent or guardian. The activity will address triggering themes of pregnancy loss and infertility).
