Dr David Bell will talk about the history of the Solomon Islands, originally discovered by the Spanish explorer, Alvaro Mendana, and three centuries later, proclaimed a British Protectorate in 1893. The islands saw fierce land and sea warfare between the Japanese and American forces during WW2. Gradual economic and institutional development came about in the post-war period, and in 1978 the Republic of the Solomon Islands was proclaimed.

Dr David Bell is Emeritus Professor and formerly University Lecturer in Petrology and Sollas Fellow in Geology, University College, Oxford.
