VERVE (Visitors, Engagement, Renewal, Visibility, Enrichment) wins Heritage Lottery Fund support
The Pitt Rivers, Oxford University’s museum of anthropology and world archaeology, has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for VERVE, a major re-display and outreach project.
VERVE, a £1.5million project in total, aims to provide vital conservation and redisplay within the Museum’s galleries, alongside a wide-ranging programme of public activities highlighting the ways in which human creativity has driven developments in techniques and technologies. If the Museum is successful in the second round HLF assessment, VERVE will start before the end of 2012.
The full project would introduce a fresh interpretive spine across the Museum’s three densely packed floors, including a new explanatory display, and supporting multimedia resources. Educational activities, workshops, and opportunities for community participation will form a major part of the project which aims to explore the design and craft skills employed in the creation of many artefacts on display, and invite expert responses from a range of contemporary craftmakers.
Dr Michael O’Hanlon, the Museum’s Director, said: “We’re delighted to have come through this first competitive round successfully and grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for this support. Such funding is vital to us, enabling us to continue to develop the Museum and ensure it is a lively, relevant, accessible destination which also meets the highest educational expectations. We will now throw our energy into securing the full funding.”
