Online databases and catalogues
Introduction
The Museum has two separate catalogues, one for all artefacts, and the other
for historic field photograph collections. These databases worked on continuously
by research, collections management and project staff.
All accessioned artefacts have an entry in the objects catalogue. Most historic field photographs are included in the photographic catalogue (and it is hoped that all will soon be included). The manuscripts collection listing can be accessed here.
Much of the wording contained in the catalogues has come directly from historic documents and therefore some of the terminology may now appear outdated and even offensive. The historical value of seeing how objects were perceived at the time they became part of the Museum's collections (or even before) is an important part of the object's history. Nevertheless the Museum would like to take this opportunity to apologise if any of the terminology causes offence. In addition, users may wish to be cautious when searching the databases as information about objects that are considered secret or sacred by local communities or photographs which show such secret and sacred activities are included in the catalogues.
