Guided Trails for KS1 & 2

Guided trails offer an interactive tour highlighting key objects, and an activity around the Museum.  We provide one Volunteer Education Guide to every ten children.

The Aztecs

The Aztecs KS2
Pupils build up a picture of how an Aztec person might have looked as they discover Aztec artefacts, as well as Central-American featherwork and body arts. Aztecs teacher information sheet (pdf)

Africa

Africa KS2
Pupils explore the diversity of Africa by looking at cultures from the savannahs of the East to the rainforests of the West. Africa teacher information sheet (pdf)

Egypt

Ancient Egypt KS2
Pupils become detectives as they look at artefacts that have survived from Ancient Egypt, such as mummies and scarab beetles. Egypt teacher information sheet (pdf)

Native Americas

Native Americans  KS1&2
Discover what totem poles and tipis can reveal bout identity and environment.  Pupils find out about the lifestyle of the Plains Indians and the Haida people from Canada's NW coast. Native Americans teacher information sheet (pdf)

Inuits

The Inuit KS1&2
Find out about traditional Inuit life and explore the materials available to craftsmen in a  cold environment. Inuits teacher information sheet (pdf)

First visit to the museum

Hands-on Workshops for KS1 & 2

Workshops are led by Education Officers and allow pupils to handle and learn from Museum artefacts.

Object handling

What is it?  Years 5 & 6
A fun object handling session to encourage questioning and analytical skills.  Pupils handle mystery objects and research artefacts around the Museum.  1 hour What is it teacher information sheet (pdf)

African music

African Music  Years 5 & 6
Discover the music and instruments of Africa, play a traditional piece on the giant Ugandan embaire xylophone and explore the African collections in the Museum.  135 minutes African Music teacher information sheet (pdf)

history detectives

History Detective  KS2
Discover what objects can reveal about people and their environment by handling artefacts and exploring the Museum.  Pupils develop their skills of historical enquiry as they find out about a mystery person from a range of sources.  90 minutes History detectives teacher information sheet (pdf)

Extreme environments

Extreme Environments  KS2
Pupils explore how extreme hot and cold environments affect peoples’ ways of life.  They handle objects from hot and cold places, and compare how the Maasai and Inuit people adapt to their environments.  1 hour Extreme Envionments teacher information sheet (pdf)

Inuits

Masks KS1&2
Pupils explore why people wear masks and how they can be used in celebrations, performances or ceremonies.  They look at how character can be expressed as they handle masks, investigate the Museum’s collections and draw a mask.  1 hour Masks teacher information sheet (pdf)

puppets Puppets and Stories  KS1&2
The session will focus on the Hindu story of the Ramayana while pupils handle Javanese shadow puppets, explore the Museum, create stories and learn about light and shadow.  Shadow puppets can be made back at school.  1 hour Puppets and stories teacher information sheet (pdf)
