Necessity is the Mother of Invention
An exhibition of work by Foundation Art & Design students from Oxford Brookes University
3 February – 17 March 2012
Work in the exhibition is diverse and investigates the requirement for many everyday necessities such as travel, language, footwear, lenses, anesthetic, money and much more. Come along and be intrigued at the crossroads between creativity, invention and discovery.
Museum collections have long provided inspiration for artists and the Pitt Rivers and History of Science Museum in Oxford are exemplary places of awe and amazement. The exhibits have provided a method of both uncovering and inventing objects, giving us a way of interpreting ingenuity from the past.
One of the students Eliza Walter has written a foreward to the exhibition comparing the investigative process to that of Grayson Perry’s recent residency at the British Museum.
Both Oxford museums have revealed the way people from all over the globe have made machines and devices for measuring and making sense of the world, from carefully positioned wooden sticks to navigate the oceans to exquisitely formed astrolabes to navigate the star systems. There will be 19 artworks in the exhibition and work includes a prototype time machine, drawing machine delicately carved candles pointing out the importance of flame and light.
