This silver gilt cross is part of a set of jewellery collected in the Balkans in the early twentieth century by Edith Durham, a missionary. A range of religious and cultural beliefs have influenced the jewellery’s designs. This cross was bought in Bosnia in 1906, where it had been made by a Catholic silversmith. The silversmith claimed that it contained a piece of the 'True Cross' (on which Christ was crucified). It was opened by members of the Museum’s Conservation Department in June 2002 and found to be empty. View database record 1940.12.34 |
